Let’s Make Ice Globes!

Ice Globes in Hope, Maine made by Grandma Molly

You will need: light colored balloons, water, food coloring, and a place for it to freeze (outside or a freezer).

  1. With a helper, put the balloon opening over the faucet and turn water on to a slow stream. Fill the balloon almost full.
  2. Add a few drops of food coloring (or the amount you want to get the color you want).
  3. Tie a knot in the top of the filled balloon and place in your freezer. To keep your balloon round, you may want to place it in a bowl.
  4. Turn your balloon periodically so it will freeze evenly.
  5. If you live in a place where there is snow as I do, I find it easier to make a round nest or a hollow in the snow for the balloon. You can check on your balloon and turn it gently as needed for even freezing.
  6. After your balloon is frozen solid, take it outside and tear the balloon from the ice globe. (discard balloon away from animals and small children).
