Books I Love
I have been a librarian for over 30 years and am now retired. I entered the profession on a whim and stayed. How lucky to have found my passion in that way? I used to love unpacking the new books when they came in. I loved reading the reviews and making the selections. I miss that so much. That, and recommending great books to others.
I love to read but I am slow at it. I am not a skimmer. I think that is why I like listening. I don't miss a word and I find a good reader is essential. I have been known to miss an exit on the highway because I was so engrossed in the story. These days, when on the road or sewing I am loving my audio books. My latest addiction is a great biography. I especially love it when the subject of the biography is also the reader.
I was heartbroken along with the rest of the nation at the loss of the great Elijah Cummings. The collaborator and readers do a beautiful job telling his story. I felt like I was right there with President Obama and Michelle Obama while listening to their books. It is interesting to hear their stories separately and how they are entwined. Enjoy! I highly recommend the titles listed here. I will be adding more periodically but this is just to get me started on my favorite books page. Keep checking back! And remember, you can always visit your local library for these titles and more!

Some of my very favorite readers of audio books are names I remember. Lisette Lecat and her reading of the Alexander McCall Smith No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series really brings the characters to life. I have listened to them multiple times and they are like medicine during this pandemic. They are truly delightful.
The late Ralph Cosham’s reading of the Louise Penny Inspector Gamache series are perfection. His voice is how I think Inspector Gamache must sound and now when I read the print versions of Louise Penny’s stories, I still hear Mr. Cosham’s voice in my head. Sadly, he passed away not long after recording The Long Way Home. I have tried to listen to another performer but we get so used to our favorite readers. I am giving the new narrator a chance. Louise Penny books are something I savor and own a few in hardcover. They are hard to find because people tend to hang on to them.
Although some of these series titles can stand alone, I am a strong proponent of reading a series in order from a character development standpoint.
